The Interns perform at RSC

Rochester Secondary College Year 11 student and Elmore local, Letisha (Tish) Mountjoy has been studying VET Music for the past 18mths as part of her senior school program. Last week she and the band she plays with – The Interns – performed a lunchtime set at RSC.

Letisha attends VET Music Industry (Performance) in Echuca each Wednesday and plays guitar alongside bandmates Sarah MacKenzie-Ross, Laila Trevena, Jules McLaughlan, Will McConnel, and Natalie Grosser.

RSC’s Pathways Coordinator, Colin Huddy said, ‘The VET program provides students with an opportunity to explore an industry in which they are interested or passionate about. It is typically very hands on and engages students who might find a regular classroom setting less engaging.’

Tish echoed this, saying “What we love about VET Music is that it gives us the opportunity to explore a career that we are interested in. Everyone is equally as amazing and talented as each-other, but the best characteristic of ‘The Interns’ is that we all support and respect one-another.’

‘We were all excited to perform live at Rochester Secondary College as it gave us a chance to showcase our abilities to an unfamiliar and larger audience. We were all trying to hold it together backstage, but when we walked out on stage and looked at everyone, it all hit home and made us realise how far we’ve come, from being strangers to performing together.’

‘My first performance was last year in the Echuca College drama room. I never thought I’d perform music in front of an audience, it was something I’d only dreamt about. I was frantic the night before and had tried to convince Mum to let me stay home. I’m so glad she made me go. That’s the only time she’ll ever catch me saying that!’

‘I’m keen for music and the music industry to be a part of my future. It has been something I have been passionate about for as long as I can remember.’

In addition to VET Music Industry (Performance) in VCE, and Performing Arts electives for years 8/9 students, RSC currently offers Music Production lessons with Matthew McMillan and will be offering instrumental music lessons for students in Years 7-10 commencing Term 3. Students can elect to learn drums or guitar - including bass - with music educator, RSC Alumni, and VET Music Industry (Performance) teacher, Ash Dinsdale.
