Welcome to the Grade 5/6 News Page
In Reading, over Weeks 3 & 4 we will be analysing language choices made by authors and examining different text types. We have now started our new Reader's Notebook novel - Boy Overboard by Morris Gleitzman. During Weeks 1 & 2, we completed our pre-reading by considering plausible predictions, exploring our knowledge of the author and investigating background information for the text, such as the setting of Afghanistan. Over Weeks 3 & 4, we will delve into exploring the first few chapters of the book.
In Writing we will continue to develop our skills and knowledge in creating imaginative and thoughtful narratives. During Weeks 1 & 2 we looked at different story endings, such as cliffhangers, humour and morals. We have also planned our own narrative and over Weeks 3 & 4 we will delve into characterisation, openers, events and a resolution. We will also edit and up-level our story to build a published piece of work.
In Mathematics, our weeks are broken into 2 sections. On Mondays and Fridays we focus on an Applied area of Mathematics and on Wednesdays and Thursdays, our students move into 'fluid groups' to develop their Mathematical understanding, at their individual point of need in the curriculum. Our fluid groups for Weeks 1-4 are based on measurement, specifically perimeter, area and volume. Our Applied unit is focussing on the concept of Time (12 and 24 hour time; timetables; elapsed time).
In Topic, students will examine Civics and Citizenship. We have started the unit by building our understanding of community and democracy. Over Weeks 3 & 4 we will consider the 3 levels of Government, Australian citizenship and how laws are made and enforced.
In STEAM, our Grade 5s have started to learn about Electricity. They have started by considering renewable and non-renewable energy and simple circuits. In Weeks 3 & 4, students will start building circuitry, using light globes, buzzers and switches. Our Grade 6 students have started to learn about programming and Robotics. In Weeks 3 & 4 our students will build a basic bot as a reminder of how to use the software, the build components and coding. We will then move to a more sophisticated design.
Grade 5/6 Melbourne Camp
The event for Grade 5/6 Melbourne Camp has now been released on Compass for families to provide permission and payment. The camp will take place from Wednesday, 11th September, until Friday, 13th September. In the coming weeks, you will receive further information about the camp.
To assist with planning, it would be great if you could let your child’s teacher know if your child will not be attending this camp.
We will be holding an information night on Tuesday 13th of August from 5.15 - 6pm. This is a chance to find out a little bit more about the camp and ask any questions you might have.
