Year 5/6

Year 5/6 Cluster News

Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. As students complete a book, they are to record the author, title and date of finishing in their Reader’s Workshop book. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.

Mathematics: We are using both the method of knowing the skip counting pattern (multiples) and then also practising the times table itself. This week we have been learning 7x multiples. Next week we will be practising 9x multiples.

A note from Mrs Bishop: When the Japanese students visit, students have the opportunity to join them on an AFL MAX overnight camp. This is only for students who want to go and is an additional cost of $170. Please think about whether your child would like to participate. We will send out more information in the near future.

A note from Mr K: With Year 6 students being so close to high school, it is important to ensure their vision has been tested recently. If any parent would like Mr K to do a basic eye test, please email him or the class teacher so we can organise this.

Premier’s Reading Challenge: Please check in with your child to see how they are going with recording the books they have read this year. Please initial next to the books they have recorded before they hand it in.

Current and Upcoming Learning

Christian Studies: We have explored the process we go through to make decisions in all areas of our life. We are applying this to the responsibility required to be safe and ethical in our online usage.

Unit Of Inquiry: We have completed work relating to light in Year 5 and electrical circuits in Year 6. We are moving onto a closing task that has been presented to the students. They are asked to choose a problem or issue to design a solution for. This task has been outlined on Toddle. Students will be completing a design challenge. The due date is Friday, June 14th. We will have dates for check points to allow students to stage their work. Students are invited to create a prototype based on their design if they wish but there will not be class time for this. The prototype is not a required part of the task.

Literacy: Students are continuing to focus on writing in paragraphs. Authors make decisions about where paragraphs are needed to bring greater meaning to their writing. All students are working through some reading activities that help us to understand their growth as readers since the beginning of the year and provides us with areas of focus for future learning.

Mathematics: We are practising the 7x multiples and will be moving onto 9x multiples next week. There are some great patterns and tricks in the 9x multiples! This week, students are looking at statistics and graphs. We have started by looking at data related to the ownership and use of mobile phones by children aged between 6 and 13 years old. There are some interesting conclusions being drawn from the data.

Other Announcements

Colour Run: Families are reminded that the Colour Run is scheduled for tomorrow (Friday, June 7th) and students are asked to bring a white T-shirt, wear casual clothes and wear their sneakers. Students can only take part if they are registered through the Qkr app.

Japanese visit: Please email Bishop Sensei (bishop.melanie@goldengrove.sa.edu.au) if you are interested in having 1 or 2 Japanese students come and stay with you the first week back after school holidays.

GLOW WEEK is fast approaching! It will be held in Week 9, June 24th – 28th and we are looking forward to a special week in which students will be able to spend time each day taking part in a special activity of their choice. A reminder that students and parents are invited to celebrate the weeks work on Friday afternoon. We are on the hunt for donations to help make the week a success. We would love donations of:

Cardboard boxes – all sizes

Cake decorating items (piping bags / tools etc)

Sand paper

Sample paint pots with some paint you are no longer using!

Embroidery hoops (just to borrow for the week – we are looking for about 6).

Please drop any donations into the office any time between now and the end of the term.

Thank you!
