Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...
This week in Prep, we have started learning about and using a new Maths process; UPAC. UPAC is a 4-step process to help the children understand and solve Maths problems.
The steps are: Understand, Plan, Answer and Check.
It has been wonderful to see the children using their mathematical skills and knowledge to solve problems using the UPAC process. Fantastic work this week mathematicians! We are all so proud of your hard work!
We recently had an exciting visit from the Dream City Team! Our students had a blast participating in a variety of engaging activities. One highlight was the opportunity to experience Virtual Reality, where they stepped into a coloring book and immersed themselves in the pages while actually coloring the pictures. Another thrilling activity involved becoming sports scientists, as students tested their accuracy and speed through a series of challenging tests. Lastly, our students embraced their inner engineers by donning lab coats and collaboratively creating light and sound experiments. It was a truly memorable and educational experience for everyone involved!
Our Year 2 students thoroughly enjoyed developing their skills in woodwork during our 'A Bright Idea' in-visit. The goal of the experience was to build a plane model with working lights as a celebration of our Science Unit: Flash! Bang! There was a chorus of banging hammers, sanding of wood and voices of helpful students, as they progressed through each of the stages. They were very proud of their end products, as they flew them out of the room! We wonder if there will be any keen woodworkers in the future who will create some innovative designs.
It has been a busy couple of weeks in Year 3. Last week we celebrated Book Week as a school. Students had a great time buddy reading with the Year 2's, visiting the Book Fair and creating a wish list, and attending the Book Week Parade where they dressed up as a character from one of their favourite books.
On Thursday, the cohort visited Legoland as part of our science unit to support their learning about balanced and unbalanced forces. Students participated in a workshop called ‘Push Car Derby’ where they experimented with push and pull forces using Lego. Then they explored the rides, 4D cinema and built and tested their own Lego cars!
During Science over the past fortnight, our Year 4 students have been busy engineers, designing and testing their own egg drop devices! This hands-on experiment allowed students to apply their understanding of materials and their properties. Using everyday items like cardboard, cotton, straws, and paper, students carefully crafted protective devices with the aim to keep their eggs safe during the drop. This not only highlighted the importance of material selection and design but also encouraged our students to think critically and work collaboratively. We are proud of their innovative ideas and thoughtful evaluations afterwards!
Last week, the Year 5 students partnered with the Year 1's to celebrate Book Week and engage in Buddy Reading. The students took turns reading to one another, sharing their favourite stories and exploring new books. The collaboration not only brought the joy of storytelling to life but also strengthened the bond between the different grades, making it a memorable and meaningful celebration.
The past few weeks have been an exciting and enriching time for our Year 6 students. One highlight was a special session with our Prep students, where we had the joy of reading to them in their learning space. It was a heart warming experience, as our Year 6's shared their favourite stories, acted out scenes, and explored new books, creating lasting memories with the youngest members of our community.
We also enjoyed two unforgettable excursions. At Scienceworks, we explored the fascinating world of light and shadow, perfectly complementing our current science unit. Our visit to the Melbourne Museum was equally thrilling, as we dived into the wonders of extreme weather. There, we watched a captivating documentary on tornadoes, flooding, and the effects of global warming, which left everyone deeply engaged and inspired.
