Grade 5 Visits

This week, Gisborne Secondary College has hosted Grade 5 students from many of our local Primary Schools: Gisborne, Macedon, Mt Macedon, New Gisborne, Riddells Creek, Romsey, St Brigid’s, Willowbank & Woodend.  The students were given a taste of high school and became familiar with the College.  The Grade 5s made slime and examined specimens under the microscope in Science; considered different types of evidence to answer the question ‘Did Marco Polo really visit China in the 1200s?’ in Humanities; learnt some of the choreography from the GSC 2024 production ‘The Addams Family in Performing Arts and created stunning abstract artwork in the style of Sandra Silberzweig in Visual Language.

We commend all the Senior School Student Leaders who ran school tours for the visiting teachers and the VM students who ran the very popular lunchtime games in the Stadium for the students.   A special mention goes out to the wonderful Year 7 Leaders who volunteered to help out with the lessons and the many activities each day – they did an amazing job and were wonderful role models for the visiting students.

Yr 8 Medieval Day

On the Friday the 14th of June the whole of year 8 had a medieval day.  We had periods of the days dedicated to a certain time in the medieval period.  In the theatre we learnt about the music and dancing with Rob.  Following that we had warfare in the stadium where we learnt about how they fought and what weapons they used.  In B5 we learnt about the samurai with Mr West.  We got to know what the armour they used looked and felt like, we got to see how they fought with what skills they used and with what they used to fight.

There was also the Age of Chivalry in B6 with Joe.  We got to see and touch the armour that the knights wore, after that the fights began.  He showed us some moves and then we got a turn to fight each other.  Then lastly in B7 we looked at the medieval feudal system and what they wore and what they could afford.  The teachers picked out one of us to dress up as a male or female in that feudal rank.

Yr 9 RAID

Term 2 has been terrific for our Year 9 engagement programme RAID. They have regularly travelled into the city and had many memorable experiences. Please see the below excerpts from some of your cohorts’ reflections.

River Cruise

On raid the first thing we did was go on a river cruise on the Yarra.  On the river cruise we got to see all the sport grounds with a great view.

Respect: we respected the boat and made sure we did not wreck anything.

Innovation: We learnt to look at things with more meaning.

Diversity: We went on a cruise and saw different things.

Achievement: We followed directions and completed a range of different activities.

The MCG Tour, Sports Museum and Game On

On the 12 of June, we took a train after meeting at Southern Cross to Jolimont. From there we walked to gate 3 and our tour guide took us inside.

He was a long term MCC member and knew lots about the stadium. We got to go onto the pitch and learn about all the expensive stands. It was interesting see how it all works and everything that goes on behind the scenes. The interactive museum was fun, and I enjoyed it.

Respect: As students had the expectation to show respect by listening to our guide tour, be careful of the equipment we played with and be sensible as other members of the public were around.

Achievement: During the sport activities it was difficult to climb the rock wall but after a few attempts and some tips from my friend, I made it to the top.
