Yr 7 & 8 Badminton

On Wednesday the 12th of June, a group of year 7 & 8 students competed in the Western Ranges junior badminton tournament. Matches consisted of four singles games followed by two doubles games with the winner being decided by most games or in the case of a tie (3-3), most points. Gisborne competed against a mix of Melton, Sunbury & Alice Miller schools across the various age groups. Our students played fantastically with all our teams winning through to the western metropolitan round to be played in the last week of term at Altona.

Cross Country

On Thursday the 20th of June, Nathan Mills and Sam Hunt took a group of 25 students to the Western Region x-country event at Brimbank Park in Keilor. On what turned out to be a perfect day for middle distance running we had some fantastic results, with many of our students placing well and teams placing highly as well. A special mention of Isabelle K who won the 15yo girls event by a minute and a half with a time of 12:01 for 3k. GSC top results:

Intermediate and Senior Girls Netball

The Intermediate Team fought hard all day and had a clean sweep of wins in the rounds. They went into the final on a high and again fought hard, eventually losing by two to an impressive Melton Secondary. Things look good for this teams as there were many year 9s participating.

The Senior Team dominated all day. They took out the final 31 to 7 against Sunbury Secondary. The team worked superbly together and it will be exciting to see how they go at the next stage.

The highlight of the day however was the fantastic sportswomanship of all of our girls. They were respectful of their opposition, the umpires and coaches throughout the day. In particular when the senior team played against a school who had players that had never played the game before it was so nice to see our girls teaching the opposition the rules and supporting them to score their first goals of the tournament. Mrs Anglin and Mrs Hall were very proud.

Basketball - Boys

Precursor

With support from John Hayward, our sports coordinator, the senior boys basketball trials kicked off on 8th March. With the overall interest in Basketball (thank you NBA), and the focus on extra-curricular activities at Gisborne, every Friday from 8th March training sessions were organized. At the peak, we had over 25 senior boys attending these sessions, with the focus on building a positive school culture amongst this group of young people. (Pictures of training sessions below)

After some tough, competitive wins in the pool games, we found ourselves in the final against Baccus Marsh. An amazing start, saw us 12-0 with the bench in full cry. Some impressive 3’s from Baccus in the 2nd half cut the margin to 3. However the boys steadied, with a couple of crucial free frows from Alex B to seal a 5 point. I could not be prouder of their passion and commitment to the process, whist exhibiting school values like Respect and Achievement. Onto the Western Metro Regional finals at Altona Stadium in Term 3, Week 3.

Basketball - Girls

Results

I had the honour of accompanying and coaching our Senior Girls' basketball team to Cobblebank Stadium, where they engaged in an exciting competition. The team showed exceptional skill and determination. Despite some of their players unable to attend and not emerging victorious, their perseverance and enthusiasm made the experience truly worthwhile.

There were only 3 teams in the pool, meaning the girls only played 2 games to successfully qualify for the finals.

Game 1 v Sunbury Downs – students played as a team and came away with an easy win.

Game 2 v Melton – was a bit tougher than our previous game, however again with their perseverance came away with a win putting us through to the final versing the winner of pool A, Kurunjang SC.

The senior girls, captained by Francesca W, played unbelievably well, however did not emerge victorious as Kurunjang had a state player who was difficult to shut out of the game. It is worth mentioning that the senior girls persevered and only lost by a mere 8 points, which I personally believe if there were more minutes than 12, we would come away victorious.

The girls demonstrated the values of sportsmanship and represented Gisborne with the utmost pride. Witnessing their conduct was genuinely inspiring.

I'd like to give special recognition to Taylor P, who took on the role scoring.

I would also like to express my gratitude to John Hayward, who coordinates our school sports and Lachlan Lean who selflessly gives up time to coach and ensure the day runs smoothly.
