Challis Cyclists
Cycling is like breathing for LCS students Gus Challis (Year 10) and sister Olivia Challis (Year 8). They have grown up with cycling as part of their family story. Gus and Olivia's grandfather Graeme Gilmore was an Australian cycling champion in the 1960s and '70s, and their uncle Matthew Gilmore was an international cycling champion who won a silver medal at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.
So, it's no great surprise that Gus and Olivia are doing well with their own cycling pursuits. They recently represented Tasmania at the AusCycling Junior Road Nationals at Loxton in South Australia.
"The more I've done it, the more of a thrill I get," Gus said.
"It's the exercise, the connections I make with cyclists from interstate and overseas, the adrenaline of the sport."
Gus is hoping to extend himself to an elite national scale.
"I'm hoping to get into the cycling development team. I'd like to see how far I can get with it."
Olivia is a little newer to the scene, but is already the only female representing Tasmania in her age division.
"I was just there for the experience and I learnt a lot," she said.
"I need to train more and just make it hurt! There was a bunch race and I learnt how to stay with them so that one day I have what it takes to win!"
Watch this space. We're incredibly proud of you both and are cheering you on!
