Prep Learning Reflection
Week 6! We're officially halfway through the last term of year!
The students have been incredible busy over the past fortnight. We've completed a handful of Literacy and Numeracy assessments over the past two weeks, giving the students opportunities to demonstrate all of the things that they've learnt and practiced over the course of the year. There are still some further assessments still do be done, providing insight and evidence for teachers to inform their end of year reports.
There will be some days where classes are split amongst the junior levels. This is a normal practice and grants teachers valuable 1-on-1 time with the student, allowing them to demonstrate their abilities and understandings outside of the busy classroom environment!
Weeks 5 - 6
For Literacy, we've continued reading Eric Carle's catalogue and have continued to use his story and style to inspire our own Writing!
We've been continuing our daily reading routines and the students are working so well both with their Independent Reading, their Paired Fluency and when playing collaborative Reading games.
We've continued on with Unit 10 of the SoundsWrite program and are currently practicing single syllable words that have five or six sounds such as 'stand', 'stops', 'drink' and 'print'!
We also got to go our first bus excursion! On Tuesday, we made our way to the Brimbank Library in Sunshine. There the student were given a tour of the facilities, learnt about some of the history of Sunshine and read a story with some of the Library staff. There will be some information brochures coming home with the students. There are some fantastic books, events and programs run through the library, so be sure to check it out!
On the same day, we also got to go on another excursion! The Preps walked over to our neighbour school, Sunshine College and were the audience for the school's orchestra band. The Preps sat and listened amazingly and loved the music that was played for them! It was also great to see some past Sunshine Heights students thriving and enjoying their experience at high school!
For Numeracy we've been focusing mostly on subtraction. The students have been identifying the minus symbol ( - ) and have learnt that it means 'take away'. We've begun solving minus problems using visuals (drawing lines) and also by counting back!
For Unit of Work, students have been investigating playgrounds! What makes them fun? What do they need to be safe? How could we improve the playgrounds that the school currently has? On the way back from our Library excursion, we stopped at Buckingham Reserve for a picnic and an explore of the playground equipment. Over the next few weeks, student will use this experience to inform their own designs.
