Signs a child’s brain is working harder than it needs to….

Puts head down while working. This means eyes aren’t teaming - able to see one thing at the same time.

Rocking and/or spinning in a chair. The vestibular system needs help staying awake.

Shaking legs while sitting. The proprioceptive system needs help staying awake or it can be feeling anxious.

When responding with a “huh” or “what”? They heard you and need more time to process information. This is connected to the midbrain which develops while crawling.

Looking down or away from a person while they are talking/responding. Eyes aren’t teaming which make eye contact challenging.

Needing to walk while talking. This is connected to the vestibular system - balance is challenging and moving helps to keep your balance so you can focus on talking.

Ignoring you while they are engaged in a task. They often can’t hear you when you’re behind them. Once you give tactile input and stand in front, you exist! This is connected to creeping which develops while crawling.

If you notice your child needing a brain break, engage them in the video on this link - Brain Break Movement Activity
