Victorian Institute of Sport

In Week 2, Year 5 went on excursion to the Victorian Institute of Sport for their provocation to their Term 4 Inquiry. Me, Myself & I. Did you know the VIS Headquarters is also the same precinct to local NPL Soccer team South Melbourne F.C. and Lakeside Stadium?

Year 5 students were excited to visit the VIS and meet the 3x of the scholarship athletes;

Tara Kinder - Swimming (who recently made the Australian team). 200m Breaststroke & Individual Medley

Harry Doyle - Mountain Biking

Em Smith - Hockey

They saw the National headquarters for Taekwondo and Judo, and visited the training facilities. They were astounded to know there were over 450x scholarship athletes that are part of the VIS.

Students played VIS bingo exploring the athletes. They explored the lives of Tara, Harry and Em and the struggles of maintaining a passion and performance for their sport at the state level. They found the fact Harry was still in year 12 as a scholarship VIS athlete to be a big eye opener. They talked about balancing their academic commitments, part time jobs and the training that’s part of the lifestyle. The students saw how all 3x athletes played a range of sports as kids before they discovered their passion.

Students looked at Paralympians like Jaryd Clifford, Jess Gallagher and Caitlin Ward to see their training preparations before they embarked in the paralympics earlier this year..

The students loved visiting the recovery zone, weights room, pool and most fun, trying to match Harry’s watts on the bikes. For the keen cyclists among the Galilee community this spritely young athlete had a 5w/kg rating that the students tried to surpass!

STEM MAD

Isabella, Darcie & Lila have been working really hard to create a new and improved prototype for their upcoming STEM MAD Nationals.

STEM MAD stands for “Make a Difference” where students are pushed to develop a proof of concept for an invention to help humankind and / or the environment.

Their families with Ms McGlinchey and Ms Leahy will be traveling to Brisbane on the 19th November. The students will be explaining their STEM Mad initiative, the concepts behind how their idea will work and how their idea will make a difference to our world. They will undergo judging on their idea following the key attributes:

  • Showcase their projects to staff, special guests and sponsors
  • Hear from Keynote speakers in the STEM field
  • Participate in student activities onsite
  • Attend the awards presentations

The Girls group is called “The Water Cycle”. They noticed a lot of water in our community is being wasted, in particular high quality drinking water in Melbourne which is used for gardening, sewerage and laundry. They noticed the trend in other countries where drinking water is a resource whereas gray water is commonly used for washing, cleaning and gardening.

It's a system that could be installed under a sink that helps reuse water. A UV light is in the design used to kill germs and bacteria in the water. Half of the water would go back in the sink as clean water whilst the other half would go to less fortunate communities where water scarcity is an issue. If there is any dirty water, it would be sent through a pipe to be used in Victorians gardens as gray water to ensure water is not wasted.

The image show the second developed prototype that the girls have been working hard on and are proud to present in Brisbane in the coming weeks.

An outstanding achievement, wishing them so much luck in the final competition!
