Service Learning MYP and Beyond

This Term students have taken their learning beyond the classroom through our Service as Action initiatives in Year 6,7 and 8 and the Year 9 Community Project. These programs align with our Orthodox Christian values, emphasising humility, aspiration, respect, and kindness.

Service as Action - Year 8 Highlights

Our Year 8 students are actively engaging in the Service as Action program, dedicating time to advocacy and voice, to serve others and foster positive community change. Each student completes a minimum of 15 hours of service, carefully logging their efforts and reflecting on the impact of their contributions. The Service as Action program included debating/advocacy and the recent ‘Challenge Yourself’ fundraising event on 1st November, gave students valuable real-world experience, helping them develop empathy, social responsibility, and teamwork. A student commented, “Through Service as Action, we’re learning how small actions can create big changes, especially when we work together to help our community.”Supporting local non-profit organisation, Five Loaves.

Year 9 Community Project - Expanding Horizons

To deepen their experience, Year 9 students engaged in the Community Project, which focuses on meaningful service projects. Working closely with supervising teachers, students investigate, plan, and execute their projects, gaining practical insights into social issues while developing research and presentation skills. Students also evaluate the long-term impact of their projects, helping them understand how their efforts contribute to a larger cause. One teacher shared, “The Community Project has transformed our students’ sense of responsibility. They’re becoming independent thinkers who take ownership of their actions and seek out ways to make a lasting difference.”The exhibition was a highlight.

Well done Year 9! We thank you dedicated staff.

Reflecting on Impact – Paying it Forward

Year 6 students launched an exciting partnership with Year 5 students, focusing on peer and community service learning. Through this initiative, Year 6 students shared their knowledge and inspired their Year 5 peers by exploring community needs and challenges. They highlighted the importance of giving back through the Backpack for Kids program, where students work together to support children in need. This partnership encourages empathy, understanding, and a hands-on approach to community service, fostering a strong sense of responsibility among students.

In Weeks 5, 6, and 7, Year 5 and Year 6 students will actively participate in gathering supplies for a community outreach project. Together, they will seek donations and resources to fill 20 outreach backpacks and 20 essential school supply kits for children in need. This effort through the Backpack 4 Kids program deepens students’ understanding of community challenges while encouraging teamwork and empathy. Through this project, students are empowered to make a positive impact by supporting others in their community. Through these experiences, students exemplify our ethos of service, compassion, and leadership, paving the way for community focused and empowered future.
