Participating in culture and language competitions is invaluable for students, as it encourages appreciation for diverse heritages, strengthens language skills, and fosters cultural pride. These events, organised by various organisations, provide students with a unique opportunity to connect with their roots, celebrate cultural identity, and enhance understanding of global traditions.

This year, students from different year levels took part in three competitions and the results where outstanding!

Students in Years 4, 7, 8 and VCE had the opportunity to participate in the Greek Public Speaking Festival which is an annual festival organised by the Modern Greek Teachers’ Association of Victoria.  The competition is open to all students who study Greek across Victoria and it gives to students the opportunity to improve their oral and language skills and to have self-confidence in public speaking.  Students who are taking part must recite a Greek poem or story or present a speech on a specific topic.

We would like to congratulate Theo Beharis from Unit 3/4 Greek Class on achieving first place in the VCE Demostenia Category!  Theo presented a speech on his life and his future aspiration.  His dedication and passion for the language truly shone through and made an incredible impact.

Students in Junior School and in Years 6 and 7 took part in the 2023 Australian-Hellenic Memorial Student Competition which was organised by the Australian Hellenic Memorial Foundation.  This is an annual even and the aim of the competition is to encourage students to learn and to engage with the events and history in Greece during World War II such as the Greek Campaign, the ANZACs in Greece during the War, the Battle of Crete and the ANZACs.  The Competition is for all schools in Victoria where the Greek language is taught, with students from Year 1 to Year 12 eligible to submit an entry.  We are very excited to announce the following winners:

The Greek Student Film Festival returned this year to offer once more to students the opportunity to use the Greek Language in creative and innovative ways, promotes group participation and confidence, and may even inspire a few filmmakers of the future.  The festival in Victoria is presented by the following organisations:  Greek Film Festival, Greek Community of Melbourne, Education Office of the Consulate General of Greece in Melbourne, Department of Education and Training and the Modern Greek Teachers’ Association of Victoria.  The topic for this year’s competition was “Children Know Everything”.  Participants were encouraged to interpret the topic as creatively within 5 minutes.

Oakleigh Grammar school submitted two videos for the Secondary School Category.  We are thrilled to announce that both films were in the winning team!  Our Year 8 student film group has won second place, and our Year 7 student film group has won third place! Their creativity, teamwork, and dedication to sharing Greek culture through storytelling earned them this incredible achievement. Congratulations to the entire teams on this well-deserved win!

We would like to congratulate all our students for receiving outstanding achievements. These accomplishments not only highlight their hard work but also their commitment to celebrating Greek heritage.
