Grade 3 Excursion

On Friday the 22nd of August, the Grade 3 team went to the Melbourne Museum and IMAX because it connects with our Unit of Inquiry, ‘Sharing the Planet’. We are learning about life cycles and living and non-living things.

First, we went to the Learning Hub. We looked at model insects and little creatures like scorpions, spiders, and moths. Jason and Maddie taught us about pollinators and predators.

Secondly, we went to the Bugs Alive exhibit. We looked at different bugs such as butterflies, cockroaches, beetles, and some freaky videos about bugs.

After snack break, we went to the Dinosaur Walk. We saw HUGE dinosaur skeletons. We also looked through cool binoculars that showed movement of the dinosaurs.

Next, we visited Dynamic Earth, where we saw Earth in different stages from past to future. Future Earth showed Australia connecting to Asia! We also looked at many unique gems, rocks, and crystals. There was even a glow in the dark crystal room! At the end, we stood on a scale and then the screen showed how much we were worth in gold bars.

After Dynamic Earth, we went to the Forest Gallery. When we walked through, we saw a platypus, fish, birds, many different plants and big trees. That area used to be a house and we saw an old chimney in there. It was a great experience walking through the gallery. 

After lunch, we went to IMAX. We got cool 3D glasses and watched a movie called ‘Flight of the Butterflies.’ Some facts we learnt about the monarch butterfly were that it lays its eggs on a plant called milkweed. The caterpillar eats the leaves on the plant for about two weeks. Then it grows into an adult butterfly. From winter to spring, it flies from Texas to Mexico.

Grade 3s had a fun day at the Melbourne Museum and IMAX. Some students said, “It was the best excursion!” We would like to thank the parent helpers for coming.
