Koonung Robotics Team Competes at VEX Melbourne Tournament
The Koonung Secondary College Robotics Team proudly represented the school at the VEX V5 Melbourne Blended Tournament, held over the weekend. This event brought together some of Victoria’s top robotics teams for a full day of design, strategy, and competition.
Our students showcased their engineering skills and teamwork as they designed, built, and fine-tuned their robots to take on the VEX challenge. The competition required robots to complete a range of tasks, from scoring game pieces to navigating the field with precision and speed.
Throughout the day, the team demonstrated outstanding collaboration—analysing match data, troubleshooting mechanical issues, and making real-time programming adjustments. Between matches, students could be found huddled together on the floor, tools in hand, problem-solving and refining their robot’s performance.
A key feature of the tournament was the alliance system, where teams form partnerships to compete in the elimination rounds. Success relied not only on technical skill but also on effective communication and strategic planning with allied teams. The Koonung students embraced this aspect of the competition, working closely with their alliance partners to coordinate tactics and achieve strong match results.
Koonung’s robot performed impressively during the qualification rounds, earning a place in the elimination bracket—a significant milestone for a developing robotics program. The students’ perseverance, creativity, and sportsmanship were on full display and drew positive attention from other teams and judges alike.
Participation in the VEX Robotics competition provided our students with hands-on experience in STEM disciplines, including mechanical design, coding, and systems thinking—all while having fun and building teamwork skills.
Congratulations to all participating students for representing Koonung with enthusiasm and professionalism.
