Literacy

This term during reading, our 5/6 students have been diving into a variety of texts. We’ve explored and analysed non-fiction, identified key information, and practised writing clear, concise summaries of books they’ve read. Students have also been reading hybrid texts, learning how authors blend factual information with engaging narratives.

During writing our 5/6 students worked hard to start the term becoming expert writers of explanation texts. Over the past few weeks, they’ve explored fascinating topics such as the life cycles of living things and the powerful forces behind natural disasters. Their writing has showcased clear structures, factual detail, and carefully chosen vocabulary.

We are now moving into an exciting new challenge — writing hybrid texts. These pieces blend the creativity of narrative writing with the precision of factual information. Students will weave accurate facts into engaging stories, bringing their readers both enjoyment and knowledge.

To support this, we are focusing on the stages of the writing process, using Tier 3 vocabulary, and experimenting with sentence variety.

We can’t wait to see how our authors blend imagination and information to create compelling hybrid texts. Keep an eye out for their finished pieces — they promise to be both captivating and informative!

Numeracy

This term, our Grade 5/6 students will explore a range of math areas this term including 2D and 3D shapes and their properties, angles, time, while also developing their order of operations to work knowledge through real world tasks and engaging games. Students will also be investigating transformations and number properties applied to algebra and location. Our Maths lessons aim to engage the students learning of concepts and skills through hands on activities and technology. There will be many opportunities for students to participate in whole group and partner work, as well as focused small groups.

Inquiry

During Inquiry in Semester 2 students have begun a new inquiry into countries around the world. Students will investigate the differences and similarities in the demographic, economic, social and cultural characteristics of countries across the world. To start the inquiry students are learning about the states and territories in Australia, our major imports and exports and the terrain which makes Australia unique.
