2025 Footy Tipping Competition

Thankfully Round 22 contained a number of very watchable games of footy. We had two people who managed to pick 9/9 with a further 21 people picking 8/9. Of those that tipped 9/9, Matt Sinclair (Class of 1983) was closest (but not very close) to the margin (56 points) in Hawthorn’s thrashing of Collingwood on Thursday night and as such is this week’s winner of the $100. Congratulations Matt!

With regards to the overall leaderboard, Natasha Watts has retained the outright lead on 141, Alister Martin sits second on 140 with Brendan Sweeney third, also on 140, noting that if at the end of the home and away season scores are tied, then the aggregate points differential (from tipping the margin in the game of each round) will be used to determine overall placings. A further eight people are on 139 so still plenty to play for with two rounds to go. For those still in contention for the overall prize, the winner will receive $1,000, second place is $400 and third place $200.

Round 23

Round 23 starts with two games on Friday night (as the AFLW season starts Thursday night) and there are a number of games that could really shake things up.

Essendon v St Kilda – 15th v 11th

St Kilda has won three games in a row and Essendon could have up to 17 players unavailable;

Fremantle v Brisbane – 4th v 5th

The last six games between these sides at Optus Oval is evenly split at 3-3.  A massive game in the context of a top four finish.  Expect a close game;

Gold Cost v GWS – 6th v 8th

Since 2015, these sides have met four times on the Gold Coast with GWS winning every time.  There is a very real chance that the loser of this game may not play finals;

Carlton v Port Adelaide 14th v 12th

In the last five years these teams have only met twice at Marvel Stadium with the games evenly split.  Neither side is in particularly good form right now;

Hawthorn v Melbourne – 7th v 13th

Melbourne has won four of the last five clashes between these sides at the MCG.  Hawthorn must keep winning to stay in the eight but don’t expect it to be easy;

Adelaide v Collingwood – 1st v 3rd

Collingwood has lost four of its last five games and are struggling at the moment but has beaten Adelaide the last six times these sides have met at the Adelaide Oval;

North Melbourne v Richmond 17th v 16th

This game is being played in Tasmania which intuitively swings things in North Melbourne’s favour, but North is on a seven-game losing streak;

Sydney v Geelong – 10th v 2nd

Geelong hasn’t beaten Sydney in Sydney since 2019.  Sydney will be without Brody Grundy.  I imagine most people will tip Geelong; and

Western Bulldogs v West Coast – 9th v 18th

West Coast were surprisingly competitive against Adelaide.  I hope that wasn’t a once off or this could get ugly.
