Kindergarten Reading Groups
Our Kindergarten students have been making fantastic progress with their reading skills! They've been eagerly engaging with books, practicing their letter sounds, and building confidence in recognising sight words. It's been wonderful to see their enthusiasm grow as they read aloud during group activities and independent reading time. Keep up the great work, Kindergarten!\
Family history - Kindy
In our History Unit, Kindergarten students have been learning about families coming to Australia from different countries. The students were lucky enough to hear about Mrs Barnes (from the admin office) who spoke about her childhood growing up in Papua New Guinea and the differences she has experienced between the two countries. Connecting people they know is the best way to learn.
Year 1 Class Visit
Recently, we were thrilled to welcome our Year 1 parents/carers into the classroom!
It was a special opportunity for families to get a glimpse of our daily routines, see student work, and experience the learning environment firsthand. Thank you to all who joined us.
Brain Olympia
On the 14th of August, 16 students from Years 4, 5 and 6 travelled to Walgett to participate in the Diocesan Brain Olympia competition. Brain Olympia is an academic initiative which began at St. Francis Xavier’s, Narrabri in 1996. The day consists of general knowledge trivia, mathematical problem solving, drama and public speaking. St Philomena’s students were split into two teams of 8 and competed against teams from the Western region of the Diocese. One team narrowly missed out on progressing to the next round while the other team achieved the top mark for their public speaking component. Both teams did an incredible job representing our school and should be proud of their efforts.
Year 6 Excursion
Students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $135 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
