Health & Wellbeing @ NLPS

Harmony Week 2025 celebrations at NLPS will take place from 24th - 28th March.

What is Harmony Week?

Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from different backgrounds. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.

The message of Harmony Week is – EVERYONE BELONGS

Did you know?

  • More than half (51.5 per cent) of Australian residents were born overseas or have at least one parent who was.
  • Since 1945, more than 7.6 million people have migrated to Australia.
  • Nearly every single country from around the world was represented in Australia's population in 2020.
  • More than 150 Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander languages are spoken in Australia
  • Apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Arabic, Vietnamese, Cantonese and Punjabi.
  • We identify with over 300 ancestries.
  • Everyone’s experience of culture is different. Culture is not defined by a country or government borders. Everyone has their own culture, traditions and identity.

Year level Learning

Students across the school, from Foundation to Year 6, will take part in Harmony Week activities with their class, reflecting on and appreciating their own culture and its connection to their identity. They will also explore and celebrate the diverse cultures within our school and community, fostering a deeper understanding of inclusion, respect, and belonging.

A Touch of Orange

To celebrate the culmination of Harmony Week, we invite students to wear a touch of orange on Friday, 28th March as a symbol of inclusivity and respect for all. Orange is the chosen colour to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and the encouragement of mutual respect. We encourage everyone to wear a touch of orange to show your support on this day.

Please note: full school uniform is still required for the day.

Harmony Week is a time to reflect on the importance of respecting each other and embracing our differences. Australia's success as a multicultural nation is built on shared values, mutual understanding, and a deep respect for one another. These values (respect, equality, and freedom) extend beyond cultural backgrounds and are what make Australia such a great place to live. The message of respect and belonging is something we can all embrace, not just during Harmony Week but every day!
