Wellbeing & Culture

Everyone Belongs!
Next week, Monday the 17th to Sunday the 23rd of March, we are celebrating Harmony Week!
“Harmony Week is the celebration that recognises our diversity and brings together Australians from all different backgrounds.
It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
You can wear orange to show your support, or you can attend/host a Harmony Week event.”
We get so excited every year to show our support for Harmony Week.
We show our support for this national celebration in our classrooms as we discuss the meaning of ‘Harmony’ at our Harmony Week whole school assembly on Friday the 14th, and in wearing orange or cultural clothing on Friday the 21st of March.
At Croydon Hills Primary School, we can use our school values as we celebrate Harmony Week:
Respect
- We respect everyone.
- In respecting others, we can show kindness.
- We show respect through valuing our inclusiveness.
Excellence
- We can appreciate the excellence we see in each other.
- In striving to be our best, we know that means being open and considerate of other people's perspectives.
- We know we can often learn the most from those who are the most different from us.
Responsibility
- We know we are responsible for our own words and actions. We know our words and actions do make a difference in our community.
- We know we are responsible for building a community where everyone can belong.
Resilience
- We understand that when we build a community where everyone belongs, we face challenges. We face those challenges with bravery, compassion, care, and humility.
- We are aware that in a community where individuals with opposing worldviews live side by side with each other, conflict is bound to arise. We address the conflict with the goal of respect, restoration and, ultimately, harmony.
On behalf of the Wellbeing and Culture Team;
We invite you to join us in showing respect, excellence, responsibility and resilience as we celebrate Harmony Week. It is more than just wearing orange or cultural garments on Friday.

RAMADAN
We would like to acknowledge that there are Muslim families within our school community who are fasting for Ramadan (28th February – 30th March). Ramadan is the ninth month in the Islamic calendar and is a very special time for Muslim people. Ramadan ends with Eid Ul-Fitri, one of the biggest Muslim celebrations involving communal prayer and delicious gatherings with friends and family.
HOLI
We would also like to acknowledge that there are a number of families who will be acknowledging Holi this Friday 13th March. Holi is a Hindu festival that celebrates spring, love and new life. You may have heard of it referred to as ‘The festival of colours’ as celebrations include singing, dancing and throwing of powder paint and coloured water.
We wish everyone a wonderful week,
The Intercultural Team
