MHiPS - Mental Health in Primary Schools

The MHiPS team engaged in professional development this week with the University of Melbourne, focusing on assessing our school's current mental health and wellbeing approach. Through this training, we explored future opportunities to strengthen our support systems and enhance mental health literacy across our school community.

As part of this process, we will soon be surveying students, teachers, and families to gather insights on our school's existing strengths and areas for growth. Your feedback will play a crucial role in shaping our ongoing efforts to foster a positive and supportive learning environment for everyone. Stay tuned for more details on how you can participate!

PBL - Positive Behaviours for Learning

Reinforcing Positive Behaviour

Teaching, modelling, and reinforcing positive social behaviour is an important aspect of a student's educational experience.

Staff at St Brigid’s  are constantly looking to “catch” students demonstrating our school wide expectations:  Safe, Responsible, Respectful

To reinforce positive behaviour we

  1. State the Expectation (Safe | Responsible | Respectful)
  2. State the Skill (From the poster in your location)
  3. Give the Ticket (To the student)

Our 3 Second 3 Step Reinforcement

  1. Thanks for being Safe
  2. By Keeping Hands, Feet and Objects to Yourself
  3. Give the Ticket

Reinforcing positive behaviours is crucial for several reasons:

Encourages repetition:

When positive behaviour is recognised or rewarded, it increases the likelihood that the individual will repeat that behaviour. People tend to continue actions that bring rewards or recognition.

Builds confidence and motivation:

Positive reinforcement boosts self-esteem and encourages individuals to keep striving toward good behaviour. It helps them feel that their efforts are valued, which can motivate them to keep improving.

Strengthens relationships:

Whether in a family, workplace, or community setting, reinforcing positive behaviour fosters trust and respect. When people feel appreciated for their positive actions, it enhances their connection with others.

Shapes long-term habits:

Regular reinforcement of positive behaviour can help build consistent habits. Over time, this can lead to a more positive environment where good behaviour becomes the norm.

Improves overall well-being:

Positive reinforcement contributes to a more supportive, encouraging environment, which can improve mental health, reduce stress, and create a more positive atmosphere for growth.
