Interact Club 2024 Retrospective

A Season of Service and Celebration: MGC Interact Club Shines in December!

December was a remarkable month for the Melbourne Girls' College (MGC) Interact Club, packed with impactful events that embody the Rotary motto, Service Above Self. Here’s a glimpse into their inspiring journey this past month.

Sweet Success at the MGC Christmas Pop-Up Market

On Saturday, December 7th, the MGC Interact Club hosted a stall at the school’s Christmas Pop-Up Market, showcasing their baking skills with a delightful array of homemade goods. Their treats were a hit with the crowd, and the funds raised will go toward supporting their ongoing community projects.

The student leaders at the market included:

  • President: Cobie Ahmed
  • Treasurer: Vianna Law
  • Media Relations: Maddie Parker
  • Committee Member: Edeline Karipidi

Their enthusiastic participation and dedication were truly inspiring, and the results of their efforts will undoubtedly make a difference in the community.

Representing MGC at the Multi-District Interact Assembly Day

On Monday, December 2nd, the MGC Interact executive team, along with their teacher liaison, attended the Multi-District Interact Assembly Day (IDAD) at Camberwell Grammar School. They proudly presented the MGC Interact Club’s annual report, which detailed their humanitarian service projects and achievements throughout the year.

The executive team members representing the club were:

  • President: Cobie Ahmed
  • Vice President: Linaya Kurukula Arachlige
  • Treasurer: Vianna Law
  • Secretary: Bianca Garrod
  • Media Relations: Maddie Parker
  • Committee Member: Edeline Karipidi

Special thanks go to Ella McDonald, the Rotary teacher liaison for 2025, who escorted the team to the event. The IDAD was a great platform for the students to network, share ideas, and prepare for another successful year ahead, starting with their traditional Valentine’s Day event in February.

Recognition at the City of Yarra Community Awards

The MGC Interact Club’s dedication to making a difference was recognised at the City of Yarra Community Awards 2024 on Thursday, December 12th. The club was honored as a shortlisted nominee for the Community Initiative of the Year, acknowledging their outstanding contributions to the local community.

In attendance were:

  • Past President: Leanne Leong
  • Immediate Past President: Emily Earnshaw and her mother, Fiona Earnshaw
  • President: Cobie Ahmed
  • Committee Member: Sarah Fox

This prestigious nomination is a testament to the club’s tireless commitment to service, and as their sponsoring Rotary Club, we couldn’t be prouder of their achievements.

Interact Club in 2025

With a year of extraordinary accomplishments behind them, the MGC Interact Club is ready to embark on another year of service and leadership. Their enthusiasm and dedication continue to inspire the Rotary Club of Richmond and the broader community.

Let us celebrate their successes and look forward to their continued efforts to make a meaningful difference in 2025. Bravo, MGC Interact Club!

Philosophy Club

So far this year Philosophy Club have explored a range of topics in applied philosophy that cover concerns such as the morality of using artificial intelligence and monitoring systems in schools to prevent school shootings, how we should treat the work of philosophers who are known to have endorse what we now consider to be immoral ideas or institutions such as racism or sexism or slavery, and what to do in a real case of a clash between the right to life of the Little Corella and the right of primary school children to a safe learning environment.

Towards the end of last year philosophy club started branching out in the media of different sorts to the articles from online newspapers and magazines by accessing some of the videos in the Ethics Unwrapped series produced by the University of Texas. In 2025 we will be continuing with this trend and exploring podcasts, both long and short, as sources for our philosophical discussions, including Philosophize This!

We continue to welcome new members and look forward to a round of productive meetings throughout the year. And, as our senior years member Zoe says: 'Philosophy club is the perfect place for invigorating discussions with friends!'

A reminder that Philosophy Club meets every Monday lunchtime in Room 111, bring your lunch and join the discussion.
