Maths Domain

‘When am I going to need this in real life?’ whines the student, unaware this cliché has been the bane of The Maths Teacher for time eternal. The Maths Teacher is always a student’s struggle away from being drawn into this argument and knows that it’s a challenge to justify the everyday use of the Quadratic Formula. But The Maths Teacher is prepared, and this time retorts ‘why don’t you hassle the English teacher about the haikus you will never use? Or the History teacher about the lessons from World War 2 you will never apply?’.

The Maths Teacher, buoyed by some divine confidence, will then summon the perfect words to silence their dumbstruck student, ‘How can you not recognise the beauty in having an explanation of the Universe? Can you at least marvel that the phone in your pocket harnesses the language of the Cosmos, and that its cold, austere beauty makes you more powerful than any person in history before you? Do you want to be creative? Do you want to build? Show patience, develop these tools and make the world your sandbox!’

The Maths Teacher, now standing upon a table and having set down their case in mellifluous splendour waits for the student to nod in agreement, possibly cry and apologise. But… no. Instead, the student rolls their eyes and repliesdimly ‘…whatever’

‘Well, you need to know it to pass the test next week’ grizzles The Maths Teacher and a star dies in some far away galaxy.
