10 Things I Love About MGC!

On Friday the 28th of February MGC hosted our 14th annual Pedal Powered Cinema. Here are 10 quick facts you may not have known about this year’s event:

  • The 2nd hand book store had one hidden copy of William Shakespeare’s ‘Taming of the Shrew’ that the film was based on and sold for $2

  • The Cadets threw their efforts behind the event this year and helped to put up (and tie down) the inflatable screen, pack up the sustainability show case at 8pm, roll the bikes back into the shed, roll up electricity cables and solar powered fairy lights and all manner of behind the scene actions with military efficiency.

  • No mains power electricity was used for the snack bar: The drinks were pedal blended via Bike n Blend and the popcorn and fairy floss carts were powered by 100% renewable, human powered energy pedalled by our friends from Trinity Primary, Camberwell Girls and Camberwell boys Grammar and Salesian College who arrived a day early to contribute their watt hours to a separate battery bank.

  • The sound system was 100% renewably, powered from the DIY HIFI solar powered trailer- Didn’t our MGC musicians sound fantastic!?

  • We hosted over 20 community organisations, including the Melbourne Climate Choir’s MGC debut, featuring one retired MGC maths teacher!

  • The EPA brought in their portable soil testing equipment and educated the community with 10 things I hate about pesticides in soil

  • Thanks to a powerful group of Year 8 cyclists, the movie didn’t stop and the screen didn’t deflate. Our most powerful year 8 pedaller from 2025 is Octavia Farfaglia who contributed 8.1 watt hours in just 5 minutes. Chisholm house contributed the most energy, generating a whopping 104.5 watt hours throughout the day.

  • Our “longest pedaller” who was awarded with her prize just before the movie night was another year 8 student, Audrey Rose, who pedalled 45 watt hours, mainly in one continuous spell between 6pm and 8pm!

  • The fabulous Junior ambassadors, Philanthrophy, Diversity, STEAM teams, arts captains, musicians, student executive and of course the INCREDIBLE Enviro reps were amazing running the whole event.

  • Environment Captains extraordinaries Ellie Baxter and Maddie Van Vliet, (ably assisted by Middle school captains Eve Howie and Zara Fletcher) juggled their year 12 commitments, their work, volunteer and social obligations outside of MGC and pulled together the biggest and best pedal cinema to date! Well done captains, you are brilliant role models, I look forward to seeing what’s next for the enviro team this year!

If you are a student and you want to get involved in next year’s cinema or have idea for other fun renewable energy events, join the Enviro Team! We meet every Wednesday lunchtime in room 216 and every third Saturday from 9am - 11am on the river bank to work on our revegetation project.

If you are an adult and you are keen to help out and grow the pedal cinema, we would love to hear from you. Reach out to Mr Andrew Vance avance@mgc.vic.edu.au to share your ideas. We are looking to host a bigger raffle in 2026 and to possibly find sponsorship to help bring in more exciting educational energy displays like a renewable energy dance floor!

Congratulations to the winners of the 2025 Pedal cinema Raffle!
