Connecting, Competing, and Contributing: Our Start to 2025

The 2025 school year is well underway, and it has been a busy but successful start for our students, staff, and families. From the very first days of term, our college has been filled with energy, enthusiasm, and a strong sense of community.
We have already hosted several key events, including our well attended parent information nights, Year 7 Welcome Night, and the Year 7 and Year 12 Camps, all of which have helped to build connections and set a strong foundation for the year ahead. The MGC Swimming Sports saw students competing with great spirit and fun, while College Photo Day captured the moments that will become part of our history.
Melbourne Girls' College is thrilled to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our 2024 VCE students in the Visual and Performing Arts, with several being recognised in the Season of Excellence.
In Media, Claudia Bellsmith has been selected for Top Designs for her children's picture book Sid and the Unexpected Guests, while Thicia Acquisto will feature in Top Screen for her film Abu Abu.
In Art Making and Exhibiting, Piper Day has been selected for Top Arts with her stunning layered and paper-cut photographic artwork Gwai Mui.
In Dance, we congratulate Lola Freeman, who has been selected to perform at Top Class in both VCE Skills-based Solo and VCE Cohesive Composition Solo: The Death of Nature at Top Class Dance 2025 at the Melbourne Recital Centre,
Imogen Martin, who will also perform her VCE Skills-based Solo at Top Class at the same prestigious event. Congratulations to these talented students on this incredible achievement
And on the water, we would like to congratulate our Year 10 students Brae Naughton, Zoe Tucker, Eve Fumberger, Zara Mcintosh and Isabelle Monro (cox) who won the state championship in the female school quad open division two. This is an incredible achievement as the open division is a Year 11/12 division, which means that our athletes were racing against students with up to two years more racing experience.
Beyond the classroom, our co and extra curricular programs are in full swing. The Student Lunchtime Clubs Expo showcased the diverse interests of our students, with many taking the opportunity to sign up for new activities. Interschool sporting competitions are already underway, Outdoor Education Camps have commenced, and our rowing students are deep into their season. Meanwhile, our cadets continue to thrive in their Monday night sessions, demonstrating discipline, teamwork, and leadership.
A highlight of the term so far was the annual Pedal Power Cinema, a unique and much loved event that once again brought our community together in a fun and sustainable way. The overwhelming support and participation from students, families, and staff truly reflect the strength of our MGC spirit.
In addition, we are proud to share that over the most recent weekend, our first group of parents and carers for the year successfully completed Youth Mental Health First Aid Training. This is a significant investment in the wellbeing of our students and a testament to the strong partnership between the college and our families. Building awareness and understanding of youth mental health is essential, and we are grateful to those who have committed their time to support our community in this way.
Last Monday, we had the pleasure of welcoming back our 2024 Year 12 graduating class for an after school catch up with staff and an opportunity to reconnect with their peers for the first time since graduating. It was a wonderful occasion to celebrate their transition into our Alumni community, reflect on their shared journey, and acknowledge the impressive destinations they are now headed towards. We are very pleased and proud to share their destinations with our community.
As we continue into the term, I look forward to seeing our students embrace new challenges, and contribute to the vibrant life of our college.
