From the Classroom

Year 5 - Mindfulness with Foundation Buddies!

This term the Year 5 students have been getting to know their Foundation Buddies. This has included spending time helping them in the classroom and playing outside. A lesson the Year 5s helped their buddies with this term, was learning about mindfulness as part of The Resilience Project. They learnt about what mindfulness is and then did a mindful walk outside with their buddy, listening to the sounds they could hear. The Year 5 students then helped their buddy stick down the pictures of the sounds they heard in their TRP journal.

Year 6 - Young Leaders Conference

On Monday 3rd of March the Year 6s travelled to the city to listen to four inspirational speakers. The speakers were Majak Daw, Emma McKeon, Catherine Laga'Aia and Thomas Duncan-Watt. Each of these speakers had their unique ways of dealing with their experiences. This was very inspiring and we could relate to the different speakers.

Emma McKeon is the most decorated Australian Olympian ever. At the young leaders conference she talked about how she dealt with mental health issues and the people that inspired her. She showed us how to deal with nerves and use that to our advantage. Her first love of swimming came when she was five watching her heroes in the Sydney 2000 Olympics and has been amazing since. She is definitely an inspiring speaker.

Catherine Laga’Aia is the real-life actress of Moana. She was very inspiring and made many sacrifices to get her role of Moana. She is a lovely, beautiful 17 year old woman. She graduated year 12 while filming overseas which is really challenging to do especially with her studying year 12. She taught us that “sacrifices are key to success.”

Thomas Duncan-Watt was very inspiring because he was talking about how he started and why he started. Thomas is a very famous screenwriter and author who has made very successful stories/movies. Thomas also had a very funny speech with different jokes and many of his favourite clips from the books he had written. Some of the books Thomas has written are 'Seekers Lost Cavern' and 'The Night Mover'. Thomas Duncan Watt created smiles all around the amphitheatre.

Majak Daw is the first Sudanese AFL player. He moved from his hometown in Sudan at 15 years old. He started watching AFL to fit in and that's when his love for footy began. He played for North Melbourne and won Mark of the Year in 2016 and he won the premiership while playing for the Melbourne Demons. He was so inspiring for upcoming athletes. He talked about how self-belief is key and how making mistakes isn't something to be ashamed of, but that it is just helping you get closer to success.

Overall it was a fantastic day and taught the Year 6s some valuable lessons. Each speaker was unique and had their own story. The day was absolutely fantastic! We sincerely thank the Parents' Association for funding all Year 6 students to attend this event.
