Year 6 Emotional Literacy – Expressing Emotions Through Poetry

Over the past fortnight, our Year 6 students have been exploring how poetry can be a powerful tool for expressing emotions. Through writing haikus, odes, and free-verse poems, they have reflected on their feelings and learned how poetry can be used as a positive coping strategy. This unit encourages creativity and self-awareness, helping students articulate complex emotions in a meaningful way. Ask your child to share one of their poems with you—they may surprise you with their insights!

This week we learnt all about Haiku poems. Haiku poems are a traditional Japanese form of poetry that consists of three lines with a specific syllable pattern. However, the first  line contains 5 syllables, the second line embodies 7 syllables and the third line includes 5 syllables. My haiku poem is about the emotion content. It starts off with, “ Sky, sunshine, daisies fill me up with peacefulness, all day, everyday”.

We also learnt all about odes. Which is a lyrical poetry that expresses, praise, and reverence for a particular subject, an ode doesn't have to rhyme but you can if you want. The ode has an introduction, a body and a conclusion. The introduction starts by stating why it's being celebrated. The body talks about various aspects using rich imaginary and personal reflections. The conclusion summarises the admiration and leaves the reader with a lasting expression. My ode is about my friends. It starts off with, “ Oh, how i am grateful to have them by my side and proudly to call them my friends."With happiness, joy and feeling confident. Making each other laugh, and crying  of happiness. With all the special moments spent together. For all my friends out there I thank you for being by my side as we continue to go through life with each other”.
