Touch Teams
Outstanding effort from our Touch Teams! Over the last few weeks our touch teams have travelled to Inverell to attend trials to select the New England Zone sides in U15s and Opens age divisions. Competing against much larger schools our sides were competitive and showcased our developing touch skills. Brydie, Ava and Ben have been selected to compete at the North West Trials in Tamworth on the 2nd April. Well done guys.
Careers in Health Expo
Four of our Academy students headed to Tamworth yesterday to attend the Careers in Health expo. The expo started with students listening to practitioners talk generally about their area of health, ranging from medicine to occupational therapy to mental health nursing. They then chose a health discipline then moved off into separate rooms and got to use equipment and ask university students and health professionals questions about careers and university courses. The photos show Eve Shanahan getting an ultrasound of her wrist and Maddy Ball testing her balance in the physiotherapy session. Eloise is standing beside a bed with a baby that is used for simulations during medical training.
Biology
Academy Biology students visited Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre to conduct fieldwork investigating the biodiversity in the woodland eucalypt forest. As part of this, students collected and analysed data from pitfall traps, a belt transect and a quadrat study. They used the data collected to determine the overall health of the ecosystem. Students had been learning about ways to study the environment and were able to put their newfound skills to practice. At the end of the day, the girls were lucky enough to meet some of the locals at Thalgarrah including a python, spiny leaf insects, blue tongue lizards and green tree frogs. Many thanks to Matt McKenzie for his help on the day.
Chess
On Friday 14 March, five Uralla Central students participated in Heat 1 of the state wide Chess Tournament. The school was represented by Connor Tobler, Sarah Canning, Josh Goldspink in the Secondary and Nate Grace and Ashton Cohen in the Primary. These students worked incredibly hard and played some phenomenal chess. They showed brilliant sportsmanship and team spirit, congratulating and consoling each other for each and every match. We had one student finish at 11th (Sarah), and the other four (including two Primary students) finish between 16th and 23rd for Heat 1. This was a great day and the students represented the school exceptionally well. Congratulations to them all.
