Debating

Interschool debating: Round 1

On Wednesday 4th March, our Year 9-12 debating teams took part in Round 1 of the interschool debates. Held at Coburg High School, our teams did an excellent job all around, with three of the four debates being awarded in NHS’s favour. Four of our debaters were taking part for the first time, too, so a huge acknowledgment of their effort and potential.

Our A Grade (Year 12s) and B Grade (Year 10 &11s) were on the negative side against Coburg High School and Santa Maria College on the topic: That the cosmetics and fashion industries do more harm than good.

Our C Grade team (Year 10s) were on the negative side against Santa Maria College on the topic: That we should ban airlines from overbooking flights.

Our D Grade team (Year 9) were also on the negative side against Santa Maria College on the topic: That it should be free to camp in all national parks in Australia.

Best speaker nods were given to Uma Nallaratnam (year 9); Freya Griffiths (Year 10) and Sam Roberts (Year 12).

A huge shout out to two year 10s (Finn Simpson-Henry and Alister Nunn) who have been boosted up a grade and ended up going up against Year 12 students and to our first time debaters who showed a lot of promise and skill – Zane Longney (Year 9), Dara Griffiths (Year 10), Louisa Cui (Year 10) and Illi Monahan (Year 11).

Our junior debaters are working on developing their critical thinking skills and confidence in debating in weekly games and activities.

More are welcome! Just come along to M15 on Tuesday lunchtimes or chat with Ms Balis or Ms Osburn if you have any questions. The Year 7 & 8 official interschool program will start later in the year.
