Year 10 Science – Genetics in Action

Year 10 Science students have been exploring the fascinating world of genetics and how traits are passed from parents to offspring.  To bring their learning to life, students conducted a fun and engaging experiment investigating inheritance using “Ma Potato” and “Pa Onion” as the parents.

Students began by examining the characteristics of each parent and calculating the expected frequency of different traits in their offspring.  Using their understanding of alleles and probability, they predicted what combinations might appear in the next generation.

They then randomly collected alleles from each parent to create their own “Vegemite babies.”  The results were both entertaining and scientifically interesting.  As predicted, the class produced five boys and five girls.  Students also observed a variety of inherited traits, including combinations of black and green eyes.  Carrot feet appeared to be dominant over parsnip feet, and yellow hair was more common than red or green.

The activity provided a hands-on and memorable way for students to explore how inheritance works and how genetic traits can be passed from one generation to the next. It was wonderful to see the students applying their scientific thinking while also enjoying the creative and playful side of science.

Prophetic Women of the Bible

Year 9 students have been exploring the theme of prophetic women, deepening their understanding of the significant role women play within the Biblical tradition.  Through their study, students examined the lives, values and actions of key women in the Bible, recognising how they responded to God’s call with courage, faith and conviction.

This unit has encouraged students to reflect on the ways these women demonstrated leadership, resilience and a commitment to justice, often in challenging contexts.  By engaging with these stories, students have developed a richer appreciation of how prophetic voices continue to inspire individuals to live out Gospel values in the contemporary world.

Synergy

Over the past few weeks, our Year 9 Synergy students have been exploring how Melbourne recognises and honours First Nations cultures and peoples.  As part of this learning, students examined the legacy of influential figures, including 9 Barak’s namesake, William Barak, developing an appreciation for his resilience and enduring advocacy for the rights of his people.

Students visited the ‘Wurrdha Marra’ exhibition at the Ian Potter Centre and explored the ‘Blak Design’ exhibition at the Koorie Heritage Trust, before considering how the City of Melbourne incorporates traditional place names and public art to acknowledge First Nations histories and cultures at Birrarung Marr.   Many students also made the most of the experience by enjoying some time rolling down the hills at Birrarung Marr!

As part of the Walking on Common Ground unit, students also investigated the issue of homelessness in Melbourne by participating in a workshop and city tour led by the Salvation Army.   They demonstrated empathy and maturity as they explored the complex causes of homelessness.  This learning was extended in the classroom, where students delivered group presentations examining the need for both short-term support and long-term systemic change to address homelessness.

We encourage parents/guardians to speak with their child about their Synergy experiences, both in the classroom and on excursions.  These conversations help foster dialogue around the issues explored in the program, supporting students as they grow into active members of their community.

Well done to 9 Barak and 9 MacKillop for their continued enthusiasm and willingness to engage fully with the opportunities offered through the Synergy Program.
