A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the MLC on Springvale Campus

The MLC teachers are incredibly proud of the positive way students have settled into classroom routines and embraced their learning, especially those who have just joined our school community this year. It has been wonderful to see new friendships forming and confidence growing each day.

During Social and Emotional Learning, students have been focused on building a safe, supportive and inclusive classroom environment. They revisited our school values and the SRPS School Wide Positive Behaviour Expectations, reflecting on what these look like in action. As part of their learning around the Zones of Regulation, students worked collaboratively to identify the emotions, feelings and energy levels associated with each zone. They also explored practical strategies to help them self-regulate, empowering them to be calm, focused and successful learners.

In Reading, students have been strengthening their ability to select “just right” books and build their independent reading stamina. They have been thoughtfully tracking their thinking while reading and recording their ideas in their Reader’s Notebooks using a range of thinking stems.

In Writing, students have embraced their roles as authors, planning, drafting, revising and editing narratives and persuasive texts. They have worked hard to include descriptive words to add detail to their characters and settings, and emotive language to convince their readers to share their opinions.

In Mathematics, students are demonstrating their understanding of how to represent numbers and their value through making, recognising and recording them. They have been comparing and ordering numbers, and locating these numbers on number lines.

As part of our Learning to Learn unit, MLC students participated in a live Virtual Classroom webinar by the eSafety to help them be safe online. They learnt how to navigate friendships while gaming online using the skills of respect, responsibility and getting help and support. Our Kitchen program has also started, and students are learning different cooking techniques and tasting delicious food they prepared during the lessons.

We have many busy and exciting weeks ahead. A key highlight will be the upcoming NAPLAN assessments for our Year 3 students; taking place over the next 2 weeks. We are confident they will approach these assessments with resilience and excellence.

The MLC teachers are truly looking forward to the remainder of the school year and feel grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow alongside our students each day.
