Music in Foundation, Year One & Year Two - with Mrs. Polson
This term in Foundation and Year 1/2, students have been exploring the picture storybook The Colour Monster. Through the story, children are learning how colours can represent different feelings and how these emotions can be expressed through music and movement. We have explored red for anger and love, yellow for happiness and excitement, green for calm and quiet, and blue for sadness. Through movement activities, students have been practising how to move safely in their own space while being respectful of others around them. We have also been imagining how a “monster” might move when feeling different emotions and discussing strategies to help us manage these feelings.
We look forward to exploring these emotions further in our creative space through art and instrumentation.
In Year Two this term, the students have been enjoying musical playground games that connect the joy of music with outdoor play. We have been singing, playing tag games, practising hand-clapping rhymes and dancing. In the coming weeks we are looking forward to introducing skipping, hopscotch and loose-parts musical games. It has been wonderful to hear children continuing these games in the playground, practising the songs and using them as a way to include others in their play. I hope the children have been inspired to bring their music home and share their new songs with their families.
This week in the spirit of the grand prix, the children have been using cars, blocks, planks and arches to build racetracks that encourages vocal warmups and exploration. They had a lovely time, playing and exploring this concept with a friend. They built the tracks and took in turns driving their cars around making car sounds as well as ascending and descending slides when going up and over the bridges. It was so much fun, that the children requested to do it for another week. So, next week we will be taking our chalk for a walk outside to draw race car tracks for our vocal warm up and exploration.
Thank you for a lovely term F-2!
