Supporting Writing at Home (Prep–Year 2)

Writing is an important part of your child’s learning, and the best way to build confidence is through real-life, meaningful (authentic) writing at home.

Everyday Writing Ideas

Encourage your child to write for a purpose:

  • Shopping lists
  • Notes or messages to family members
  • Labelled drawings or simple stories
  • Weekend or daily recounts
  • Birthday cards or invitations
  • Signs for games or their bedroom

The goal is to have a go—spelling doesn’t need to be perfect!

Helping with Letter Formation

You can support your child by:

  • Encouraging correct starting points and direction of letters

  • Practising their name writing regularly
  • Using fun materials (chalk, whiteboards, sand, crayons)
  • Reminding them to:
    • sit letters on the baseline
    • leave spaces between words
  • Modelling writing—let them see you write and talk about how you form letters
  • Practice Sheets

Keep It Positive!

  • Praise your child’s effort and ideas
  • Keep writing short, fun, and pressure-free
  • Celebrate all attempts—this builds confidence and independence

A little writing every day makes a big difference!
