This program is for students who want to gain basic skills and knowledge in order to become an animal carer. Students will learn how to care for a variety of animals and gain the practical skills and basic knowledge needed for entry-level work in the animal care industry. Students will learn how to assist with general animal care, provide food and water for animals and follow occupational health and safety procedures in the workplace.

 

This course may provide you with entry level employment in animal rescue centres, pet retail shops, welfare organisations and veterinary clinics.

 

Year 1

  • Work in the animal care industry
  • Apply communication skills
  • Complete animal care hygiene routines
  • Feed and water animals
  • Assist in health care of animals
  • Participate in workplace health and safety processes
  • Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices
  • Develop husbandry guidelines

Year 2 

  • Provide basic care of mammals
  • Provide basic first aid for animals
  • Source and provide information for animal care needs
  • Provide enrichment for animals

Box Hill Institute Information 

Assessment

This program is not a scored study. Students who successfully complete the Unit 3 & 4 sequence will receive one ATAR increment, which is calculated as 10 per cent of the fourth-ranked study score from the student's 'top four' Unit 3 & 4 studies.

 

Campus

This program is delivered by Box Hill Institute. Students attend the City campus on Wednesday afternoons for the majority of the classes. 

 

Throughout the year, students are required to attend approximately six (6) full day workshops in Box Hill (Elgar Campus) and will be required to arrange their own transportation on theses occasions. 

 

Please note: Students are required to be up to date with their tetanus vaccination for entry into the course.
