English

For calculation of a student’s ATAR satisfactory completion of both Units 3 & 4 of any of the English studies is required. VCE students must attempt English/EAL, or Literature 1 & 2. Check with your English teacher for English studies recommendations.

Please note, that any student accelerating in an English study in any of the VCE units must have demonstrated advanced ability because students’ maturity levels and knowledge and understanding of the world greatly influences their performances in these components of study.

Unit 1

In this unit, students will engage with reading and viewing texts with a focus on personal connections with the story, and work to shape their ideas and knowledge in student-centred texts. Students also will engage with and develop an understanding of effective and cohesive writing. They apply, extend and challenge their understanding and use of imaginative, persuasive and informative text through a growing awareness of situated contexts, stated purposes and audience.

On completion of this unit the student should be able to:

  • Produce personal and creative responses to texts.
  • Students explore a range of writing styles and genres for different purposes.

Unit 2

In this unit, students will explore the ideas, concerns and tensions and explore the ways in which vocabulary, text structures, language features and conventions of a text work together to create meaning in a set text, or extracts from a set. They will also analyse arguments and the use of persuasive language in texts, and create their own texts intended to position audiences.

On completion of this unit the student should be able to:

  • Complete an analytical response to text.
  • Identify and analyse how argument and persuasive language are used in text/s that attempt to influence an audience, and create a text which presents a point of view.

Unit 3

In this unit students read and respond to texts analytically. They will also consider a crafting text framework of ideas and construct their own writing with a specific purpose, form and audience.

On completion of this unit the student should be able to:

  • Produce an analytical interpretation of a selected text.
  • Produce two separate writing tasks that are based on the framework of ideas and the mentor texts.
  • Complete a reflection on the writing process.

Unit 4

In this unit students compare the presentation of ideas, issues and themes in texts. They create an oral presentation intended to position audiences about an issue currently debated in the media.

On completion of this unit the student should be able to:

  • Produce an analytical interpretation of a selected text.
  • Construct a sustained and reasoned point of view on an issue currently debated in the media, including a written statement of intention.
  • Analyse a range of persuasive texts presented in different modes
