Science Update

Year 8 Science

An innovative demonstration of how the Human Digestive system works elicited many ‘ewwws’ and ‘ahhhs’ from our engaged and entertained Y8 Science students. The demonstration involved grinding up an egg and bacon sandwich in a mortar and pestle and then moving the mashed-up food into different containers which resemble the digestive organs. The 'food' moved through a funnel and rubber hose to represent the mouth and oesophagus and a stocking to represent the small intestine among other steps. A great way for all students to learn and retain information about a complex process.

Biology Unit 1

Last Tuesday Phoebe W got the opportunity to explore the body systems of a rat in detail during her dissection. The organs of the digestive, circulatory and reproductive systems were observed and analysed with an impromptu heart and kidney dissection also occurring. Phoebe showed great poise and curiosity during the lesson and was impressed by the length of the small intestine.

Dissections are extremely useful in giving students a more thorough and realistic understanding of the complexities and connections between body systems and are a highlight of the Biology course.
