From the Classroom
Grade 5/6
We have certainly had a busy couple of weeks to begin the term. Our main focus has been the 150 year celebrations. The 150 year dress up day was a highlight. Students worked in multi-age groups and participated in a range of activities. The 5/6 students were a great support to the younger students in their groups.
On the celebration day, we had a wonderful group of Grade 5/6 volunteers who conducted tours around the school. We have had such positive feedback about this and we’d like to congratulate our tour guides on the great job that they did. We will certainly use their skills again during our Open Day on Thursday 9th May.
For the next 5 weeks, Grade 5/6KW have a 4th year student teacher working in their classroom. Her name is Olivia Bayliss and she is from Cobram. She is focusing on teaching a Writing unit on Information Reports as well as a Spelling unit. She has built a great rapport with staff and students and we are enjoying her company. In Maths, we are learning about Division and will soon begin a unit about Money. We are continuing to strengthen our automatic recall of number facts through Blitzmaster and 99maths. We will be sending a Blitzmaster sheet home for homework to consolidate the learning at school. Just a reminder also about recording home reading in the diaries and returning them to school on a Friday.
Next Thursday the students will participate in a Hip Hop session, run by the Stomp dance company from Melbourne. This is always a favourite.
We look forward to our Cross Country next Friday. This year it will be held at the community oval, with the 5/6s running on the path around the outside of the oval. The event is expected to start around 9:15am.
Art News
The Grade 1/2 students have been studying Australian Indigenous artist Wayde Clarke (also known as Alejandro Lauren). He uses bright colours and pattern to tell stories, every painting sharing an experience that he has had in his life. Students were inspired by many of his artworks to create a layered scrape painting. They used acrylic paint and rulers to scrape the colour across their page, then used acrylic paint pens to add details using different colours, patterns and pictures. Please enjoy the Grade 1’s hard at work finishing their designs today.
