SENIOR School

Year 12 Assessment Week

7 -14 JUNE

During this week, students will complete School Assessed Coursework (SACs) and School Assessed Tasks (SATs) for their VCE subjects. These assessments are supervised by external supervisors and will mimic the procedures of their end-of-year Year 12 VCAA Examinations. The timetable for the Assessment Week is included below. Students will require their student ID cards and VCAA student numbers. Students are required at school for all assessments. Students should arrive at least 15 minutes before the commencement of their assessment. Absences from the assessment need to be supported by a doctor's certificate, and a parent/contact is required to the Senior Campus Office.

Year 11 Midyear Examinations

The Year 11 examinations are a formative assessment that assesses student level of understanding their Unit 1 studies. Students will be graded on these assessments, which will provide insightful feedback on how they can improve for Unit 2. The timetable for the examinations is included below.

Year 11 VCE VM Work Placement

During the Year 11 midyear examination period, our VCE Vocational Major students will have a block of work placement. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to apply the skills they are learning in their VET studies, develop relationships which could lead to future employment opportunities and practice fundamental work-related skills.

VCE and VCE VM Attendance

The minimum attendance requirement is 90% to be eligible for a Satisfactory (‘S’) result for an Outcome in VCE and VCE-VM. Students, parents/carers can check attendance via Compass. Teachers use the VCE % column (on Compass) to check if a student meets the attendance requirement.

It is important to note, if a parent/carer ‘explains’ an absence via Compass, this does not automatically make it VCE complaint. See below.

Absences from school can fall into two categories:

  • School Authorised (VCE compliant)
  • Unauthorised (non-compliant)

What to do if a student’s attendance is below 90%?

A students can apply for Redemption which runs Thursday afternoons 3.30pm–4.30pm on the Senior Campus. Students can ask their teachers to log them into Redemption via Compass.

One hour of Attendance Redemption redeems 2% attendance. All Unit 1 and 3 attendance must be redeemed by the end of Thursday 20 June.

If a student’s attendance is below 70% for unauthorised absences, students may not be automatically given the opportunity to redeem attendance. This will need to be positively case managed by the Senior School Team.

If a student misses more than 30% of classes due to authorised absences, they need to apply for Special Consideration with the Senior School Team.

Practical Tips for Parents to Encourage Positive Learning and Study Behaviours:

  • Ensure your student/child has a form of organisational device to support them with managing their timetable, work commitments, homework, and assessments. Some students opt to use a physical diary, and some use a digital platform such as their outlook calendars.
  • Print the SAC Calendar (accessible via Compass) and note the SAC dates for your student/child. Help promote balanced study behaviour so students can prepare for upcoming assessments as well as manage their homework schedule.
  • Reinforce healthy study behaviours: Students should be studying in an environment conducive to study (away from their beds and without loud background noise such as TV/Netflix). Study is a 'controlled process'. Controlled processes require selective attention, meaning students cannot divide their attention between two tasks at one time.
  • Encourage healthy sleep hygiene and good sleep routines: adolescents should be aiming for nine (9) hours of sleep. Sleep has both a restorative purpose and helps consolidate memories. If your student/child finds this difficult, healthy sleep routines can be helpful. For example, avoiding sugary drinks and caffeine before bed, avoid phone use before bed which emits blue light that delays the release of the hormone 'melatonin', try a warm drink before bed.
  • Managing stress levels and wellbeing: if you notice your student/child is becoming stressed around assessment or throughout the term, please do not hesitate to contact the school to either organise student wellbeing support or a meeting with the relevant coordination team. Again, routines can support a student managing stress and wellbeing. This could be regular exercise, a healthy and balanced diet, avoiding excessive caffeine, being well-prepared for due dates, upcoming assessments, and family/work commitments. Taking time out to prioritise their wellbeing is also important.

Year 12 September Holiday Practice Exams

Looking ahead, we want to ensure our Year 12 students are well-prepared for their end-of-year examinations in October/November. As part of this preparation, we have scheduled important September Holiday Year 12 Practice Exams. These exams are compulsory for any student completing a Year 12 subject and serve as excellent preparation for the final assessments. Included below is a copy of the schedule. These examinations are run by our VCAA Examination Supervisors and marked by experienced VCAA Assessors.
