St Joes on Show

On Wednesday evening, our second St Joes On Show event took place at Brigidine Campus and it was certainly a night to remember!

A class group of Year 9 students assisted in the event management as part of their Personal Best Program. At the beginning of their assessment task, they explored the benefits of participating in art, as an audience member, viewer or as an artist or performer. This formed the rationale of holding an event like St Joes On Show.

They identified the following benefits of art through brainstorming and research:

  • It is a good way of storytelling
  • It's important for your health
  • It increase social and community connections
  • It improves mental health by decreasing stress, anxiety and depression
  • Art is important for community health and wellbeing
  • As well as providing a unique setting in which people come together to create objects or performances, the arts create opportunities for people to expand their social networks and develop new friendships that can provide social support and impact positively on health
  • Benefits for the whole community include a more creative society, a society that is more socially accepting, helping to define and identify what it means to be Australian

After the event, the Year 9 Personal Best class made some evaluations against the rationale above. They used an evaluation method called P-C-O that stands for Positives, Concerns and Opportunities.

I was thrilled to hear so many positive experiences, as well as some concerns (or things that they would do differently) and opportunities for next year's event.

If you have any positives, concerns or ideas for opportunities regarding St Joes On Show, please email me as we endeavour to expand and improve upon the opportunities that our students have to present and perform, and for our broader community to participate in art events that provide rich and engaging experiences.

With sincere thanks to all staff and students who were involved in the event, and to the families who came along in support - you are incredible!
