End of Term 3 Chess Update

Term 3 has been a busy time for the MCC Chess Club. The representative team played extremely well as they took part in two state wide competitions. In the NSW Country Secondary Schools Knockout Chess Teams Competition, the representatives have produced the best results yet seen. They finished in the top four, only narrowly losing in the finals.

The team also represented the school in the NSW Secondary Schools Chess Competition. The team performed extremely well, with Jake Salvestrin going through the entire competition undefeated. This is a feat which rarely occurs and I congratulate him on an excellent effort.

In week 6, both the representative and social players visited Calrossy to play a number of friendly chess games. This is a great opportunity for players of both schools to continue to develop their playing skills. Players from both schools had a great time. I thank Mr Stuart Wood for hosting the games at Calrossy.

Wednesday, week 8, saw the MCC chess Club travelling to St Mary’s Gunnedah to play a mini tournament between our schools. The clubs try to meet once a term, with both having at least 18 players each competing against each other. Chess was the winner as all the players had a great time and continued to develop their skills.  Big thanks to Mr Ed Heap and Ms Samantha Kennedy for running and hosting the games. We aim to continue these games in the future.

The chess club runs every Friday, second break in the Library. I invite anyone interested in Chess to come and join the club.

Interesting chess fact: “The longest official game of chess took place in 1989 that went on for 20 hours and included 269 moves.”
