Author visit - Dr Cameron Stelzer
We thoroughly enjoyed Cameron's visit last week. The children were enthralled by his storytelling and loved learning how to illustrate the characters in his book. The teachers were also impressed that he was able to apply the sessions to each of our different stages. We now have his books ready to borrow in the library and they are flying off the shelves. If you have ordered books they will take a couple of weeks to come as he has to receive all those orders and sign all those books.
We also had fun in the library before his visit trying our hand at being illustrators.
What a great experience it was to have an author visit our school.
Graphic novels have certainly increased in popularity over the last couple of years and our children are really enjoying them. I often get asked the question are the children really reading? The answer is YES.
Graphic novels are full of text. Sure, they have drawings, illustrations, and sometimes photos, but they also have text that readers must actually decode, analyze, and comprehend. With graphic novels, children still must follow plots and character development.
We have lots of graphic novels here in the library catering for all of our different readers. Children are enjoying the series by Anh Do, The Babysitter's Club, Wings of Fire, Tom Gates. So if your child is bringing home these comic type books week after week then they are reading.
I will be sending out overdue notes to children that have outstanding books. Please have a look and if a mistake has been made and the book has been returned please let me know. If the book can't be found please let me know also but keep looking. Most books do turn up sooner or later.
