Autumn Season

As a new father and busy Easter long weekend, this daily devotional caught my attention.

Have you ever had a crazy busy week? Those weeks when you’ve worked long hours, all your social events have landed at the same time and you still need to run the house and support the family? Maybe you’re in a season where every week feels like that!

You know you’re in over your head when you’ve been burning the candle at both ends all week and then you realise you have a social commitment on Friday night, all the way on the other side of town.

And you’re exhausted and tired and all you want to do is curl up on the couch but you can’t let anyone down.

But then your friend calls you. They are apologising profusely but something’s come up and the evening has been cancelled.

You take a few deep breaths.

Then you deliver an Oscar award winning performance of saying how disappointed you are that you can’t catch up. You then convey a Mother-Theresa-like graciousness by saying that you totally understand and you think that you should be able to survive another day.

But really you are so excited you’re doing cheerleader type backflips in your mind and already heading to the wardrobe to get your track suit pants!

Relief. Freedom. Lightness.

We all have seasons that are busy. But we are not meant to live like that all the time.

God created seasons. He created Autumn. This is the time when trees let go of all the additional leaves and focus back on their core.

Lord, help me to be discerning as to what I need to hold and what I need to let go. Amen.

Do you need to embrace the season of Autumn?
