Auslan

Did you know that last Saturday 13th April was Auslan Day which celebrates the language of the Australian Deaf community? The day serves as a platform for Auslan users to proudly promote Auslan as their native and preferred language. It’s an opportunity to recognise the culture, history, and linguistic richness of the Deaf community.

This year at Mitcham PS students have been introduced to Auslan as a second LOTE that the school is offering. Students have been given the opportunity to learn a language that is very different from a spoken language. During first term, students were introduced to communicating and understanding using Auslan and have also been learnt about deaf culture, accessibility, and inclusivity. As we move into Term 2, please take a moment to read through the attached PDF which explains the origins of Auslan and its recognition as a community language.
