Designing LNPS Student Involvement in the Public Education Strategy

On Thursday 18th March I had the pleasure to facilitate a workshop that is part of a broader set of workshops that LNPS has been involved in over the last few years as part of Martin Westwell's (Chief Executive, Department for Education) discussions on the purpose of public education in South Australia.

The workshop was online at Tirkandi and was facilitated by Department for Education staff in an interactive way to help deepen the understanding of wellbeing for learning and engagement. Students at LNPS collaboratively unpacked the Areas of Impact from the Public Education Strategy, which are: Wellbeing, Equity and Excellence, Learner Agency and Effective Learners with the support of the Areas of Impact Action Cards.

During the workshop, Steele McLean who has been nominated to be on the 2024 National Student Voice (NSV) Council as a representative of South Australia, also had the opportunity to share his ideas. The NSV was initiated in NSW by the Department of Student Voices in Education and Schools (DOVES) Minister's Student Council and is a wonderful reflection of the work the council is doing.

The NSV aims to elevate student voice nationally and this is an opportunity for nominated students to speak on behalf of students all over Australia raising concerns and solutions to current issues to the National Education Ministers.

At the workshop, Steele addressed hundreds of schools across South Australia and spoke about wanting to focus on student wellbeing and bring it to the forefront of the conversations when he travels interstate later this year; this is also in line with the aims and directions in the Public Education Strategy. Steele was 1 of 4 students selected in the entire state and we are very humbled and incredibly proud that he will be representing Lockleys North Primary School nationally. Go LNPS!

"In and out of school I play football, surf life saving and many other sports. I am interested in drawing, swimming and the olympics. I like to surf life saving because it helps people and it is a really  good life skill to be able to save someone.  I would really like to have the opportunity to have a say  on what we do during school. Thank you"
