We've been off to a flying, yet smooth and positive start to term 2. Last week we held a memorial ceremony for Chelsea who sadly passed away in 2021. Her family kindly donated and installed the beautiful seat out the front of the school, that many students, parents and staff sit on each day. A big thank you to Karen O for carefully planning this special event; thank you also to other staff members, Chelsea's family and friends and past students for your involvement and support. While I did not have the pleasure in knowing Chelsea, attending the service gave me some appreciation to the wonderful, charismatic and well loved young lady that she was.
This morning we hosted a special assembly to announce our new school captains. Congratulations to Hamish M and Joel B for being voted by your peers into this role. Congratulations Hamish and Joel.
Both Hamish and Joel exhibit our school values to the best of their ability everyday at school, they are great role models to our younger students and are exemplary school leaders. I look forward to working with them throughout the year, particularly as they help to host our Principal Award Assembly each week.
This term we welcome three new Education Support staff members to our team, Alex M, Caitlin F and Jack D. Alex and Jack will predominately work in our Secondary Section of the school, while Caitlin will be working across all sections.
This week, Ash S commenced leave to prepare for the birth of her second child. We wish Ash well during the last stage of her pregnancy and birth of her new born baby. Casual relief teachers Trudy T and Julianne will replace Ash and teach in room 20 this term.
A team of staff have begun preparing to celebrate Education Week, with the theme of STEAM. During the week beginning Monday 13 May, all students at Croydon SDS will engage in STEAM activities with a water theme. The activities will be hands-on and exploratory, and I'm sure lots of fun! On Friday 17 May at 9am, we invite family and friends to school for an Open Morning to visit classrooms to see some of the STEAM activities students have participated in throughout the week.
Further information will be shared with families about Education Week Open Morning in our next newsletter. We encourage you to save the date.
It is an honour and delight to have recently received the School Wide Positive Behaviour Support Gold Level Award. This award has been attributed to everyone's (mainly staff and students) work in implementing many effective structures into the school to promote and support positive behaviours. Strong survey data highlights that our school values are visible, clear and consistent at Croydon SDS with the community knowing, living and working hard to display these everyday. A special thanks to Sam, (SWPBS leader) and the SWPBS team for working through each implementation stage, with the latest being a focus on Classroom Systems of Support.
We will have a special event to showcase and acknowledge our Gold Award in the near future.
