This term in English, we are exploring the amazing world of Early Civilisations – Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Through stories, pictures, and classroom discussions, students will:
🔹Learn what life was like long ago in these civilisations
🔹 Discover fascinating facts about pyramids, kings, farming, writing, and inventions
🔹 Build reading comprehension skills by identifying key ideas and new vocabulary
In writing, our focus will be on:
🔹 Writing personal recounts (what happened, how we felt, what we saw)
🔹 Using coordinating conjunctions (like and, but, so) to create complex sentences
🔹 Adding descriptive words to make our writing interesting and clear
🔹 Using punctuation marks like full stops (.), question marks (?) and exclamation marks (!) correctly.
In phonics, our focus will be on:
🔹 continuing to grow our phonics knowledge using the Sounds-Write program to build decoding and spelling skills.
Maths
In Mathematics this term, students will be introduced to a new math program for our school ‘PR1ME Mathematics’. This program incorporates the 5C’s: Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication, Creativity and Confidence to build a deep conceptual understanding of mathematics. Some of the key areas of focus this term are Graphs, Addition and Subtraction and recognising Equal Groups. Through a mastery learning approach, where concepts are taught in depth before moving on, our Grade 1 students will be supported to problem solve, build fluency and their confidence as Mathematicians.
We look forward to implementing this program into our school and will share our progress along the way.
Wellbeing
Students have demonstrated an excellent knowledge of our school values and learning dispositions. We will continue to focus on our values to help our students grow socially and emotionally by encouraging:
🔹 Kindness and respect in the classroom and playground
🔹 Expressing emotions using words and calm choices
🔹 Becoming independent in unpacking bags, organising books, and managing belongings
🔹 Practicing mindfulness with breathing and quiet moments
