YEAR 11 ACP: ASSEMBLAGE PROJECT

This term, our Year 11 Art Creative Practice students embarked on an exciting new assemblage project. For those unfamiliar, assemblage is an early 20th century art-making approach where artists incorporate everyday objects, often disparate and recycled materials, into their paintings and sculptures.

This project was only possible thanks to the wonderful donations received from the McKinnon community. It seems many of us are keen to give new life to items we no longer need.

With contributions of e-waste, old computers, car parts, old golfing gadgets, and various other random materials, we began by researching key modern and contemporary artists who explored the assemblage process, such as Louise Bourgeois, El Anatsui, and Tony Albert. Following this, students commenced their practical artmaking with a soap carving workshop and a collaborative project. In groups of four, students were challenged to create an artwork within a double period using randomly assigned materials.

Finally, students began sorting through the donations, generating ideas, and planning their individual pieces. This stage encouraged them to discover how disparate elements could be combined to create something unique and compelling. After a considerable amount of hot glue, taking things apart, more hot glue, students have produced some interesting results.

We invite you to visit the T block School Gallery to see some of these works alongside other year level artworks and designs.
