Performing Arts Curriculum - Term 1
Mhairi Shepherd - Learning Associate (Performing Arts)
We have had a great start to the year in the Performing Arts department. Students have been exposed to live performances and engaging practical lessons providing them with lots of inspiration for their own creative work. We have welcomed Ms Francesca O’Donnell to the team as a junior Drama teacher. She brings professional acting and theatre industry experience to the classroom, as well as many years of teaching at Stage School Australia.
Year 11 Theatre Studies and Year 10 Theatre Productions students had the opportunity to see Shakespeare Under the Stars in the Royal Botanic Gardens.
This was a truly memorable event where nature, art and storytelling combined to create theatre magic!
Arts Centre Melbourne subsidised tickets for our Year 9/10 Dance class to see ‘United’ a contemporary dance performance as part of the Asia Topa Festival. This was a unique experience where students got to sit on the Sidney Myer Music Bowl stage immersed in an innovative work.
Our students were also shown examples of excellence at the Top-Class Theatre Studies Concert at the Melbourne Recital Centre. This exciting concert featured talented students performing scripted dramatic monologues and presenting theatrical design briefs.
Our junior Music and Drama classes have seen new and emerging talent appear across the year levels. Year 7 Music students have selected their instruments to specialise in and Year 8s participated in a Rock Band rotation learning Guitar, Keyboard, Drums and Voice.
Year 7 Drama students have learnt about Mime and Movement whilst re-enacting Greek Myths and Year 8 Drama students have focused on self-devised work creating their own Comedy plays.
To celebrate all the hard work in Term 1 in the Performing Arts, we are finishing with a Curriculum Showcase where performers invite their own friends and family to see a snapshot of our classroom programs. Thank you to the Performing Arts teachers who continue to make a difference in our students’ lives.
