What Did You Do At School?

Prep
Congratulations to our incredible Prep students who have done an amazing job during their first term at school! Their transition into Prep has been a delight to witness. We are so proud of how much they have grown, and we are excited for the journey that is to come! Some of our learning adventures have included sounding out L-E-G for the word leg and discovering how letters make words. Our little learners got crafty making daddy long leg spiders – perfect for our leg theme!
We have been working hard to remember everything that happens in a story, and so we learnt how to say a five-finger retell, which helps us to recall the characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. It’s like being story superheroes, remembering every exciting part! The fun didn’t stop there – we joyfully ventured over to visit our Year 6 Buddies in their classroom in Week 9. Our Big Buddies are very cool, and we love spending time with them! Together, we decorated leaves and poppy flowers for a special ANZAC wreath that we will share with the school next term at the Oxley ANZAC Memorial Service on Thursday 24 April at 6.45 am. Everyone is welcome! It’s our way of saying a big thank you to the brave soldiers who have helped to keep us safe. We hope and pray that all our families have a safe, peaceful and blessed school holidays.
Year 1
In Integrated Studies, we have been exploring the concept of community and discovering the various elements that comprise the places where we live. We have been hard at work designing and building our own classroom precincts, using materials from home to create imaginative spaces with sustainable features. From parks and shops to exciting entertainment hubs, every detail has put our creativity and critical thinking to the test. It’s been incredible to see our ideas come to life as we constructed vibrant, miniature communities!
Year 2
We have started constructing buildings for a community precinct. We are using collected resources to construct our buildings and create sustainable features such as water tanks and solar panels for the buildings. We look forward to presenting our buildings to our parents at the end of the term!
In writing, we have been learning to persuade our audience to believe our opinion. We recently wrote about our favourite food. Our persuasive skills were so good that our teachers were getting hungry and wanted to try our food!
We have been learning to recognise and create patterns in Mathematics. We have practised making our own patterns for our partner to solve and written out the steps to solving number patterns. This has helped us build strong problem-solving skills.
Year 3
In the last two weeks, we have been busy with some fantastic hands-on learning. In Mathematics, we have been working hard on understanding fractions, using fun activities like making paper cakes and turning our names into fraction bars, finding which proportion of our name is made up of vowels and which are consonants. In Writing, we have been practicing our persuasive skills by writing letters to our parents or family members, convincing them why we should get our ideal pet. It’s been great to see our creativity and ideas come to life! In Integrated Studies, we are preparing for our Artefact Expo, creating European and First Australian items from scratch. We’ve been busy building models of convict ships, spears, flags, and even canoes. It’s been a term full of energy and creativity, and we can't wait to see the final projects!
Year 4
We excitedly set up our Integrated Studies First Contact Expo this week. We have researched Indigenous and European artefacts and then created models of one of the artefacts. We also researched the original materials used to make them and identified what we could use now to replicate them. We created a plaque to record important information about our display. Our teachers have loved to see our creativity and persistence as we tackled this task.
Year 5
As Term 1 comes to an end, we reflect on the incredible progress we have made so far this year. Over the past few weeks, we have been learning about persuasive writing. We have enjoyed using emotive language, rhetorical questions, and hard-hitting evidence to form convincing arguments. As a year level we have debated topics such as Should Year 5s be included in interschool sport? and Should the legal voting age be lowered to 10? It was very interesting to hear everyone’s opinions and discuss our reasoning. A highlight of Term 1 was meeting our incredible Year 1 buddies. We have loved getting to know them and learning about their bubbly personalities. We are looking forward to growing in our leadership skills and taking care of our little buddies throughout the year.
Year 6
We have embarked on an exciting camp to Canberra, where we have had the opportunity to explore our nation’s capital and deepen our understanding of Australia’s history, government and culture. From visiting Parliament House to discovering national landmarks and museums, it has been a memorable and educational experience. We look forward to sharing more about our adventures and what we have learnt when we return.
