Prep students have continued learning about life cycles this week. So far this term they have learnt about the life cycle of a butterfly and a frog! This week, they learnt about the life cycle of a spiny leaf stick insect. We are lucky to now have these insects in the Environmental Education classroom! Students learnt how they change from an egg to a nymph, and then an adult stick insect. Some students even had a go at holding the stick insects!
This week, the Year 1 and 2 students continued their International Cultural Art Studies unit by exploring Chinese art and culture. Their focus was on Tangram Puzzles. Tangrams are a traditional Chinese puzzle made from seven flat shapes that fit together to make pictures. These shapes include triangles, a square, and a parallelogram. The goal is to use all seven pieces to create fun pictures like animals, people, or boats. The students got their own Tangram Puzzles to cut out, and they practiced creating a variety of different pictures with their shapes. Their favourite design was stuck onto coloured paper. Great job, everyone!
This week in PE, Year 3 and Year 4 practised their AFL kicking techniques. We tried to improve our accuracy and power in two different kicking activities. In the first activity, students were spread across the gym aiming to kick the ball towards a yellow pole when standing at a cone. The children aimed to knock the pole over to gain maximum points. After, students were split into their red, blue, green and yellow team groups and practised their power kicks to see how far they could kick the footy. Well done everyone taking part in this week's PE lessons!
In Performing Arts, our Year 5 and 6 students have been exploring a range of theatre styles, including Elizabethan theatre, Japanese theatre, melodrama and physical theatre.
Using these styles as inspiration, they have worked collaboratively to create their own original scripts and performances. Throughout the process, students have shown clear growth in their confidence and expressive skills, bringing their characters to life with energy and creativity.
Last week SMPS celebrated NAIDOC Week to recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. In our library we have a growing collection of books to celebrate the diversity of First Nations Cultures.
