Classroom Update

Year 7 School Update

The MITS fellas had an unforgettable experience earlier this year when they went out bush with Uncle Paul Wright to make their own Yidaki! With expert guidance from Uncle Paul and their awesome teacher Jayden, the students got hands-on with every step of the process. From carefully stripping off the bark and shaping the wood to burning in unique designs (just like Harry and Curtis - pictured) before finishing with a smooth coat of lacquer and a beeswax mouthpiece, they are putting in hard work and creativity to bring each Yidaki to life.

Bethany (pictured) has been hard at work in her Writer’s Notebook, responding to a video prompt with a ‘See, Think, Wonder’ Y-chart. This tool is helping her break down her observations, dive into her thoughts, and pose curious questions about the topic. Meanwhile, Marius (below middle) enthusiastically shared his completed brainstorm, demonstrating a strong start to his writing process. He’s planned his ideas thoughtfully, building a solid foundation for his work.

Our science program continues to flourish, thanks to the fantastic support from Lisa and her inspiring team students from the University of Melbourne. Their partnership is bringing science to life in our classrooms, offering our students hands-on experiences they won’t forget.

Last week, Jaydah and Morgan (pictured), put their engineering skills to the test by designing their own earthquake-proof houses! As part of our natural disasters unit, they learned how to create stable structures and tested different designs to see if their buildings could withstand a simulated quake.

Students have been using watercolor paints in Yarra Park to create

beautiful representations of trees that connect them to home and

community. This project, part of their exploration of character strengths,

highlights creativity and connection through, personal artworks, with

each tree telling a unique story.

Year 8 School Update

In Intercultural Studies lessons, students have been designing and

creating their own boomerangs - check out Kanema’s (pictured)!

This week, the Year 8s, along with a few eager Year 7s,

headed down the coast to the beautiful Wadawurrung

Country to stay in Torquay. The students have been enjoying

an exciting mix of surfing, bike riding, kayaking and plenty of

fun together!

Latia said, “it’s been hard at times but I have enjoyed pushing through and completing all of the outdoor activities.”

Shaylee shared, “camp has been a great experience learning new things like surfing and creating an even stronger bond with friends.”

In recent weeks, students have completed their major assessments, showcasing the incredible academic growth they’ve made during their time at MITS. Their hard work and dedication has been highlighted and is just one of the many reasons we’re excited to see how they transition to their new Pathway schools next year.

Jodie, Laelani, and Morgan (Year 7) are pictured at Firbank with MITS Alumni, PJ and Sherry (right), who are about to finish Year 11. It’s always special to see our current class connecting with past MITS students who are making strides in their own educational journeys!
